Glenwood: A Modern Extension Honouring Architectural Heritage
"Architecture should be rooted in the past, and yet be part of our own time and forward-looking."
– Moshe Safdie
Set in a leafy area of West Edinburgh, the Glenwood project was an opportunity to reimagine a historic home originally designed by Basil Spence and Sir William Kininmonth. This thoughtful renovation extended a previously utilitarian space into a modern kitchen and dining area, adding to the uniqueness of the home's original design, and adding to the architectural significance of the building.
The new extension is set in the home's spacious rear garden, from which the curved frameless glass wall of the new structure and the turret-style larch pantry is noticeably striking. The floor tiles and lighting provide seamless continuity and creates a natural flow from indoor to outdoor spaces. From the Kitchen area, the panoramic curved doors slide open wide to allow the garden air and birdsong to be enjoyed in a light-filled space that opens beautifully onto a stone-tiled patio.

The zinc roof and cobbled paths further elevate the outdoor experience, while a steel reflection pool adds a tranquil focal point.
Inside, meticulous attention to detail is evident in every element, from the clerestory windows bathing the space in natural light to the exposed beams that transform a functional chimney into a design feature. Each aspect complements the home’s historic character while delivering a contemporary, functional space.
The build required innovative problem-solving, from craning materials over the house to managing the complex curves of the structure. Each wall had differing radii which added another layer of intricacy to the design. Detailed planning and collaboration with David Blaikie Architects meant that the construction challenges were handled in a way that respected the vision of the client, and design team, resulting in a home that honours its architectural heritage while embracing a modern design.
